About
Much of our work since 2016 has focused on following developments in federal policy in the wake of the election of a Presidential Administration that is generally hostile to supporting affordable housing and energy efficiency programs that benefit low-income families. Specifically, we are interested in programs that complement state and utility policies that our state coalitions focus on advancing and improving, such as the Weatherization Assistance Program, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, Project-Based Rental Assistance and the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit. We work with allies and members of Congress who share our interest in protecting these vital programs from being eliminated. In the wake of divided government after the 2018 election we are also working with allies on Capitol Hill to explore ways to increase federal support for affordable housing and energy efficiency.

Initiative Goals
Our primary goal is to protect and expand the capacity of federal policies and programs to finance, and provide for the affordable housing and clean energy needs of all low-income individuals. We do that through:
- Tracking and analyzing existing federal housing and energy policies that support affordable housing development and preservation;
- Identifying and educating partners and allies about new policies and innovations to existing policies that improve services, increase the pool of resources, and support affordable housing stakeholder engagement in the policy making process;
- Building stronger national partnerships between affordable housing and energy advocates;
- Working with affordable housing groups to mobilize effectively in any federal conversations about climate policy; and
- Ensuring that environmental groups are aware of and versed in the importance of robust housing policy as climate mitigation and adaptation strategy.
Initiative Activities
Working alongside the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI), EEFA develops congressional briefings to highlight the importance of federal programs that provide energy assistance to low-income communities.
EEFA communicates useful information regularly with coalitions, partners, and our network about developments and news from Congress and the federal agencies.
EEFA produces letters, fact sheets, stories, and reports to provide analysis, testimonials, and evidence that strengthen the case for effective, robust federal programs.
EEFA welcomes opportunities to collaborate on educational briefings, events and Capitol Hill visits with allied groups focused on energy assistance, energy efficiency and affordable housing policies.
